Shadowrun Returns is now available for pre-order on Steam. The game was crowdfunded via Kickstarter back in April of 2012, receiving over $1,800,000 dollars from its fans.

Shadowrun started as a role-playing game, akin to Dungeons and Dragons, almost 25 years ago. The game is set in the near future, blending cyberpunk and high fantasy together to create a unique universe. Large mega corporations control most of the world that is inhabited by humans, orcs, trolls, elves, dwarves, and many other creatures.

Those living in this universe can interact with a worldwide neural network, aptly named the Matrix. When companies or criminal organizations need unpleasant tasks handled, they hire shadowrunners, specialists with no identities, to complete them.

It’s been almost seven years since the last Shadowrun-inspired video game was released. The cross-platform, multiplayer-only FPS game for Xbox 360 and PC was considered a flop when it released in 2007, and its backstory is considered non-canon. Its lack of sales and users led to the servers being shut down by 2008.

Shadowrun Returns is a reestablishment of Shadowrun within the video game world. Returning to its roots, the game is being developed by Harebrained Schemes with Jordan Weisman, the original creator of the franchise. The game is designed as a 2D turn-based RPG with a focus on tactical combat and immersive storytelling through character development.

Players will be able to take on the roles of shamans, mages, street samurai, and more as they delve through the Shadowrun’s single-player campaign. When players have completed the main story, they can then go online and download community-created stories and levels designed in the provided level editor.
