Harebrained Schemes has announced today the that release date of Shadowrun Returns for Steam and tablet devices is scheduled for July 25, 2013. Shadowrun Returns will be the first game from Kickstarter that received over $1 million in funding to release to the public.
The Washington-based developers also revealed that Shadowrun Returns will release with the game’s editing tools and full access to the game’s single-player campaign in the editor format. Having access to the full campaign will allow players to expand upon the story already in place, tweak portions of the story they may not like, or even create something wildly different.
Nine Inch Nails founder Trent Reznor stated the inspiration for opening the game widely up to its users came from an unusual place.
“The idea of releasing all of the editor files for the Shadowrun Returns campaign was based on my experience working with Trent Reznor on the Alternate Reality Game (ARG) for his album Year Zero” said Jordan Weisman, founder of Harebrained Schemes and originator of Shadowrun. “Trent empowered his fans to re-mix his music anyway they wished by releasing the GarageBand tracks with the album.
“With Shadowrun Returns we are doing the same thing; players can start from what we have created and build on it, revise it, or use it as a starting point for completely new stories. I believe we are the first to release an editable version of an entire campaign, and we are excited to see where the players take this universe.”
Shadowrun Returns was funded in April of 2012, receiving over $1.8 million to create the game. The title is a turn-based tactical RPG featuring a unique, hand-painted art style set in the Shadowrun universe that blends cyberpunk dystopian themes with high fantasy.
